Having led a wicked life, you are doomed to spend eternity in hell. The devil (quite a generous guy, once you get to know him) offers you a choice of punishments:

(A) To continuously push a heavy boulder up a steep slope. Your arms ache agonisingly all the time and yet you must keep pushing this rock for ever.

(B) To stand in the middle of a lake with luscious fruits hanging all around you. You are tormented with a great hunger and a burning thirst and yet the minute you reach out for a fruit it moves out of your reach. The minute you bend down to drink the water, the level of the water drops.

(C) Traditional punishment. You are thrown into a fiery pit where you spend eternity burning in an unquenchable fire.

So, which punishment do you choose?

Well I think I will make a choice just for argument's sake, not that I agree with what you said in your statement. The Devil does not punish sinners and neither does God use him to punish. The Bible speaks of Hell having been "created for the Devil and his angels" and not for mankind. Also it speaks of Hell being "thrown into the lake of fire that burns with brimstone" for all eternity.

So, you see you are greatly mistaken! I am quite reluctant to make any choice from those listed above, I am quite certain I won't end in such a situation. Should I find myself in such a place, the Devil would be so terrified - he would chase me out of his domain, just as the Pharoah did the Egypt to the Israelites/Hebrews.

Actually the first 2 are from Greek Mythology. I think, if the devil existed, he wouldn't punish those who led evil lives, only the goody-goody's who for some reason did not meet god's impossibly high standards. Why would the "Prince of Darkness" and "Father of Lies" punish people for evil deeds, a bit hypocritical don't you think?

I'd choose B. I figure you'd get used to not needing food and water quicker than you'd get used to constant agonising pain.

in tamil there is a wise saying:

INNA SEIDAARAI ORUTHAL AVARNAANA
NANNAYAM SAIDU VIDAL.
THIRUKURAL
the meaning is if any one harms you, you should punish them by fetching them the good deeds..it is the most admirable punishment..........
