I am assuming you are calling Vista a "newer version of XP"? Yes she will have to reformat. Anytime you want to switch back to an older version operating system you have to reformat. If she were upgrading from XP to Vista, she would be able to choose the upgrade option and a reformat wouldn't be required.

The reaction of being dissatisfied with a new OS and wanting to go back is very common, especially when the user interface is so different like Vista is compared to XP. I had several friends do the same thing when they upgraded to XP from Windows 2000.

Unless your friend is having problems with hardware or software compatibility, my advise would be to continue using Vista. Eventually it will become comfortable and your friend will grow to like it. There will be a point when almost everyone will be using Vista and your friend will be ahead of the curve.

Patience and persistence is a virtue.

You will need the Windows XP setup disk. Put that in the CD drive and reboot the computer. On reboot the CD drive should read the XP setup disk and start the installation process. Follow the steps, including format the hard drive. This will erase Vista and everything on your hard drive. It will install Windows XP, along with a few basic programs. After it installs, follow the directions and it will load into Windows. You will need to reinstall any other programs you want on your computer. If the programs came with Vista, you may not be able to install them with tthe Vista disk.

Good luck.

My husband works in computers. He says that all new computers now come with Vista and you should stick with it, he says it is not that bad and everything is going to start being programmed around Vista. But users with older computers should NOT upgrade to Vista, but rather wait till they buy a new computer. He says if you want XP you will need to install and reformat.

Yes, a format of hard drive is required to install XP.

You may want to take backup of all your data before formating hard drive.
