It was in case they were head-butted - in bare-knuckle fighting there were very few rules and it is easier to defend with the palms inward. Nowadays, with better rules and gloves - head-butting is outlawed - for obvious reasons and the guard has changed in order to protect against the hands and not the head. The circling of the hands is just meant to dazzle and confuse the opponent and is quite a dangerous tactic - many people have been knocked out due to an open guard.

As fighting has developed, so has the strategy.

With bareknuckle fighting, the point was to stand straight up, feint your way in...and bury your knuckles into the person's body. Usually with enough banging, the ribs would break. It was also why the head was held high, it wasnt really the primary target. Its why the term "kill the body and the head falls true" is still used.

Bareknuckle also involved a little more things like forearms..tying arms up while you hit...hitting on the break. It was really a different style than what you see now. If they did it, it was more functional for maximum damage. It wouldnt work now because boxers have pillows wrapped around their hands.

There is supposed to be more of an impact if you twist a punch because there are more muscles involved in the movement. I think that is part of the reason.

Modern fighters don't do this becuase it is easier to see punches coming. The Modern fight game is based on scoring a little more. Older fights are based on beating your opponent until you won.

If you hold your hands up with the palms facing away from you it tires out the muscles in your lower arm, but if you hold them up with the palms facing you - you don't!

Modern fighters have their own unique style fo doing things - Remember Mohammed Ali with his Rope-A-Dope thingy????

Its kinda like - to each his own!

Good question. Maybe if someone goes back to that style they will be new world champion. A bit like Shayne Warne unique style in cricket.

I don't think anyone really knows... It was probably largely a style thing. Much like boxing guards have changed many times since then.

I have NO IDEA, whether this is RIGHT, but, it seems LOCICAL, to ME!

MY theory, is, that, they DID so, so that, - at the point of IMPACT, the knuckles made greater CONTACT, with their opponent's HEAD, - their "PRIMARY" TARGET, - thereby, increasing the chances of knocking him OUT

Because counter punchers would rip them apart.
