Scientists believe that fossil fuels like petroleum are formed from dead plants and animals that have been buried in the Earth for a long time..

Plants grow because they get energy from the sun which is used to make the chemicals that make up the body of the plant; Animals grow because they eat plants and get their energy from them, which they use to make the chemicals that make up the body of the animal.

Then we burn the remains, and this releases the chemical energy as heat.
