He is VERY sedintary and goes for days consuming fewer than 600 calories per day. I know he requires approx. 2400 calories per day for body maintenence but I can't get him to eat on his own. What are the PHYSICAL symptoms of starvation I can point out to him and the dire consequences of his eating habits. I believe it impacts every aspect of his personality and performance. Help!

See if you can get him to a physician.
Have you ever thought of counseling.
Perhaps he is on drugs. Don't mean that to sound so insensitive.

You have three issues:
Your son is sedentary,
he consumes too few calories,
and that he is skinny.

When I was 16, I was 6'3" and weighted 145 and was sedentary. My mother had no idea how much I ate, because I snacked all the time, between huge meals.

Being skinny is not a problem (medically). A diet with sufficient protein is important because the body produces about 2000 different enzymes and all require protein to produce.

Exercise is important also.

You should take your son to a doctor. There are pediatricians who specialise in teenagers.

Just see that there are healthy foods for him to eat.

If it's a healthy food & he likes it keep it on hand.

If it's not a healthy food & he likes it don't have it around.

He may well be eating more than it seems to you.

The big thing I would think is how to get him to be more active.

There must be things that need to be done around the home that he could pitch in & help with. Walking to stores to get things etc.

See if he is interested in any school activities.

Wow...the basket ball coach would love him...seriously he needs to talk to a nutrition counselor....he can't survive on that many calories...he will eventually go pre puberty if he doesn't eat right...plus do serious damage to his organs, boy can suffer from eating disorders too, get him help right away...good luck and god bless!

he's a teenager, i doubt if he even tells you what he actually eats outside of the home. if he is naturally thin especially at 16 it may be nothing to worry about i filled out and grew larger after i turned 18. the most important think is to talk to him (talking is NOT cajoling or nagging)

He could dehydrate, which is very dangerous...it certainly does affect his performance and well being....Get some counseling for him if he is trying to starve himself,,,,that's not right!!!

Why won't he eat? Do you think he's anorexic?
