I know a few people (more like children) who have this same speech problem. Their "R's" sound more like "W's". For example, if they say "Car" is sounds more like "Cow". I was wondering if there is a specific term to this type of speech problem. Also, what causes it? how does it get cured?

I am not making fun of them, but I have always wondered that for 30+ years.

It's called a "lisp" and there are a few reasons for it..it could be a birth defect or it can be the way the teeth are possitioned and also it can just be bad speech trainning...someone in this situation should see a speech theraspist..

Honestly, I don't know what the term is, if any, for that particular problem. I understand that you're not mocking kids either! My nieces do it. It really bothers me, because I feel that, to a certain extent, parents can help their kids stop doing that. It makes them sound uneducated. Sometimes, I think the parents just haven't taken the time to correct the slur? Maybe I put too much responsibility on the parents, idk! I'm not one yet so I can't be too judgmental. ;)

Basically, it seems that most of those kids grow out of that problem, however unattractive it might be. At least as they grow up around people who are using the proper pronounciation, they recognize what that is and adopt it for themselves.
