My brother-in-law is an orthopedic surgeon and avid weight lifter. He is a meticulous, healthy eater--fowl, veggies, no sweets, etc. In the 20 years I've known him, he has spent 2 hours at the gym 5 days a week. However, only recently when he supplemented with protein power did his muscle mass improve tremendously. No need to spend a lot of $$, just look for 25 or more grams per serving with no additives. Beware of the products with growth hormones or very expensive pricetags.

Consume lots of dosas, idlis, pesarattu, adai, ural dal (kal dosai), urad dal and chana vada, vegetable bhajjis, bondas, vellaiappam, appams (dishes made in South Indian homes); or consume lots of dal every day (atleast 1/2 kg)(urad, chana(kabuli and kala), rajma, masoor, arhar, moong); take 1/2kg of curd daily; eat three eggs every day. Also eat boneless and oily fish whenever you can.In this way, you do not have to take any protein supplements.

No, protein supplements are not harmful unless you over do it. Exercise is a good way of building your muscles.
