My child was invited to a birthday party for siblings a couple years apart in age. The invitation has both children's names. My child barely knows one of them. Do you still buy a gift for both or only the one who is the same age as my child?

I think it's cruddy that the parent is doing a joint birthday party and has invited you to "both". The parent is spending half the money (one party instead of two) and suggesting that you spend twice the money for two gifts rather than one. That's crass and I'm ashamed for that parent.

If I were in the situation, I'd do one of two things. First, skip the party and have your kid give the friend a gift next time he/she sees them (school or playtime or whatever). OR, go to the party with a gift for your kid's friend and a card for the friend's sibling. If you feel you need to have a gift for the other kid, don't spend more than a dollar or two... a jump-rope or matchbox car or something along those lines.

Or you could REALLY make a point and put both kids' names on one present.

I feel sorry for the mother. Obviouslly she doesn't know better, so I would buy a real gift for the child you know, and then a card saying Happy Birthday for the other one. As far as I am concerned, you shouldn't have to buy for the other child, but don't make a big deal of the fact that they didn't get a present from you or your child.

I would get both of them something, because it is both of their parties!! The other child will not understand why you did not bring him/her something!! You do not have to spend a lot of money!!! I always do $5-$10 on a child b-day gift!!! Give both of them a card with $5. in it!!!

my son and daughter where born on the same day just 3 yrs apart. when they were little we had them together they were separate gifts from some guest and then others gave something for both of them. depending on their age you could get a movie, games, sand toys, badminton set etc. my kids are much older and have their own set of friends and so i have two separate parties. I would buy for both or a gift for both of them to use.

I give my children joint parties because their bdays are close but on the invitations, I only put the name of the one they know, I think you do not need to buy the other child one, if the parent gets mad they should not throw a joint party, I dont know about that parent but I make sure to invite equal amounts.

You can not buy a present for one and not the other, at the end of the day both children's names are on the invation if you cant afford gifts for them both speak to their mother. I'm sure she would understand

I would get them both something. It might hurt the other one's feelings if you just bring a gift for the one your child knows.

This has happened with me before and at the time was on a pretty tight budget so this is how I solved the issue I bought a board game and put both kids names on it.

It is a gift for both of them and the family loves the game so they play it all the time.

The Mom really appreciated it
