Religion does not progress at that same rate as science. History has shown us that Religion fights against science at every turn, sometimes to the point of ruining a scientists life (Galileo is a fine example... Newton is another). It usually takes several decades for Religion to catch up to what science is showing us. Even in modern times we see Religion fighting against science with all the arguing about Evolution. Religion only adapts after it sits in the dark for a while. Individual people may adapt their religions to our current values, but Religion itself never adapts in the same way individuals do.

Ok, just what does science have to do with our values? If our values are truly valid, then they are the same always. Following the ten commandments is no different today then 100 years ago.
We adapt to our religion, our religion doesn't adapt to us.
