I've had poor speech ever since I could start talking. Only had speech therapy when i was in the second grade. My speech problem consists of missing some letters in certain words like "fruit". when I talk to fast , it comes out sounding like " fuit".I'm turning 21 this year and determine to fix my speech problem for my future endeavours. I wanna become a Chef but need to be well spoken so my co- workers could understand what I'm saying. Money is tight so can't afford a speech therapist so what can I do to fix this problem on my own?

I work in a speech tx office and I know how it is impossible to get insurance to pay for therapy services. You could try a letter of medical necessity from your primary care doctor in which case therapy may become covered under your insurance. However, if you really don't want to go back to therapy, first step I would suggest is taking a look at your grammar; "I've had poor speech ever since I could start talking" (I have had poor speech since the time I began speaking) is an example of poor grammar and simply improving your grammar can be a big start to your problem. Best of luck to you.

It's difficult to steer you in the right direction since I haven't heard you speak. Fixing the problem on your own will be difficult. It sounds like one of the things you are doing is reducing your consonant clusters (for example, "fruit" becomes "fuit"). Your best bet would be to gather words that target the sounds you need to work on. Drill yourself, preferably with a helper who can give you some feedback on how you sound. If you don't have anyone who can help out, you can use a tape recorder and play it back. Keep track of how many words you could understand and how many were unintelligible or difficult to understand. Make flashcards of those words. Practice saying them in front of a mirror. Often times, the problem lies in the way you are placing your tongue and lips when you are making the sounds. Since you have had difficulty with your speech your whole life, you may have a hard time zeroing in on what you need to do with your mouth to correct the problems by yourself. It may very well feel quite comfortable to position your lips and tongue the way you have been for so long and therefore it would be difficult for you to change now, albeit not impossible.
I understand money is tight, but a speech-language pathologist is really the person you need to see. If you do have health insurance, you can try going through that route. Check in your participating provider book for the section on speech-language pathologists. If not, another option would be to check into graduate schools in your area that have speech-language pathology clinics in-house. They often charge reduced rates since supervised graduate interns conduct the therapy. Therapy can also be done on a sliding scale in some clinics. I'm not sure where you live, but you can find a listing of graduate programs in speech-language pathology in your area by visiting http://www.asha.org/gradguide/

I hope this helps. It is difficult to change speech patterns that have become habitualized, but it is not impossible if you work hard with a qualified professional. Good luck!

Well just talk to your self. Or should I say read out loud to your self.

It would be easier if you had a tape recorder.

You could record some thing & then read what you recorded as you play the tape.

You also could listen to tapes of people talking & listen to the sounds.

Of course if you were to slow down as you talk you would make less mistakes.

If you know what your problem is you are well on the way to fixing it.

Take heart.
