How to edit boot.ini in such a way that the DOS becomes a separate OS in win XP. So that when I boot my PC it shows two options : WinXP and DOS.

DOS is an Operating System not the command prompt that you see outside of Windows. You can put in your Winxp cd and go to command prompt in windows and type this in:

D:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

If your CDrom drive diff. then d drive then change that to what it is. But what this does is adds the recovery console to the boot.ini and adds on your HDD. This is just like command prompt but limited to some commands..

Put the disk in, go to Accessories, then go to Back Up My Computer
