My son gets extremely bad Migraines. (about 4 a week). The neurologist has had him on depacote and it reduced the frequency. I wanted to know if anyone knows of anything else that I can try without giving him tons of med. His migraines come on suddenly so there is no warning signs. I don't know what else to do. I control his caffeine, sugar red dye and give him rolaids with magnesium. Does anyone know of something different. The nero wanted to put him on an antidepressant used for adults but that cant be good for him. He has already suffered for 2 yrs. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

I know that when I was younger, and my parents would use the fireplace, i would get back headaches. So as well as tracking what foods your boy eats, track his environment too.

See a chiropractor and massage therapist. - optional

Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.

Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.

The cure - start with a professional massage, you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).

For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from.

Your doing good as far as controlling his caffeine and Sugar. I've been getting really bad migraines for about 8 years now. I would keep him on the meds if it is helping out with the severity of them. If no meds are available when he gets his migraines, place an Ice pack on his forehead and have him lie in a dark, quiet room. This helps me out quite a bit when I have no meds on me to take. I hope that this helps you out.

i was 8 when i was diagnosed with migraines (im 28 now) and my doc didnt give me any meds, just made me have no caffeine, chocolate, and stay away cigarette smoke (big factor in mine)...if u want to keep your child off of meds, what helps me now is lying in a dark room, cold packs on my head, no noise, and unfortunately, when i vomit i feel much better, although i dont induce it, the headaches just make me have to then i feel better after...i never had the mri or cat scan although my docs wanted me to, they had me ride it out til i was 12, then pushed it, but i just never wanted to know if something was wrong...but it runs in my family and my dad had all those tests and he was ok...just the migraines....hope this info can be of some help and i hope your son can cope with the headaches, i feel for him, but these will probably be with him forever.

Hi Julie. I'm not sure if this will help you. Migraines, in my personal experience were brought on by extreme stress. I'm wondering if your son has a lot of stress in his surroundings? If he does, try to reduce the causes, that may/will help him.

Best of luck to you and your son.

You know if he is only 6 years old, you should really see his Dr. I would be so worried. I have a 6 years old little girl. Wow, hmmm and his DR didn't say anything about having him check around his head for anything? I would be so worried, I would probably be in your shoes right now asking the same question. Well I will be checking on you .

Headache is a pain in the head, scalp or neck. Headaches can be
caused by minor problems like eyestrain, lack of coffee or more
serious reasons like head injury, brain tumors, encephalitis and
meningitis. Taking painkillers continuously can have harmful side
effects, so it is better to modify your lifestyle. More information
