I have a tattoo on my lower back. It's a cross about 4 or 5 inches tall. I would like to get something added on to it, but nothing religious like, Because I'm not much of a religious person.(growing up i was raised catholic, now times have changed. I want to get something added like a cobra wrapped around it, something like that. I would like to know if it would look bad, and do you think it will make me look bad as a person. seeing as though snakes are not a good symbolism in religion. I know if it's something I want then i should get it..But I'm just saying i don't want to get shot for looking like an Antichrist .(not saying i would get shot,But you know...)?? I sort of want to get it covered up,but i feel its my past so i shouldn't.But does it make me look contradictory?(probably does)Anyways...any help would be nice..please no RUDE comments..I'm asking for opinions, I'm not asking to be preached to.

lots of people get contradictory tattoos and honestly i have seen much more horrific tattoos than a snake wrapped around a cross. like a baby that stabbed itself in the head (yes, that is really a tattoo that i have seen) if the snake is what you want then it is what you should get. i'm pretty sure that if some tattoo hater goes on a shooting rampage you wouldn't be the first person shot.

I don't have anything against the symbolism, but there are two things that spring to mind.

First, a practicality. Adding a snake to the existing tattoo may end up not showing either to it's best advantage - I mean, you'd essentially be having a sort of partial cover-up, and though tattoo artists can do amazing things with cover-ups it's a harder job than just tattooing a fresh patch of skin, and often involves going very dark indeed in terms of the colours used. Doing this may end up being a bit of a compromise in terms of the quality of the tattoo.

Secondly, you really don't sound sure this is what you want. I mean, everyone here can give you their opinions until the cows come home, but ultimately the person this really affects is you, and you sound very undecided. I've nothing against tattoos at all, but I do think you should be certain before you get one. And the fact that you're uncertain about your existing tattoo, as it stands, isn't a reason to jump in and have it altered in a way you aren't sure about either...

My suggestion would be fistly to go along to your tattoo artist of choice and discuss the possibility of having a snake added, or alternatively of having a complete cover-up with something else entirely. That way they can give you the rundown on your options so you can make a decision based on all the necessary information. And then, go away and think for a bit longer.

Something else you could do, if you want to acknowledge your past but show that times have changed, is to have another, completely unrelated tattoo summing up where you are now in life - although again, you'd need to think this through properly first. I've always been of the school of thought that a person's tattoos mark stages of your life, and it sounds as though you want a way of showing that things have changed for you without seeming disrespectful to how things used to be for you, and this might be a way to achieve that. But at the end of the day, it's your decision, and there's no rush. Take advice, and take your time.

Hope this helps, best wishes.

Are you wanting to change to cross because you don't consider yourself to be religious? Have you considered just completely covering the cross with something else all together. It might have to be bigger, and take more than one sitting, but it might be better just to start from scratch.

Edit: Adding a snake may suggest a duality type of thing. You are religious at heart, but not a perfect angel. It works as far as I can see. The bad thing about tats is they will offend certain people even if it is a cute kitten or something. It is going on you, so ultimately, it's your opinion that counts. Could look sweet

I am not religious either, but I don't think I would get a snake wrapped around the cross, religious people may be offended by it, you could have the cross drawn into something else, tattoo artists are really good at that.

You can always consider to cover the cross completely but it's a big work and I don't think you should ''cancel your past'' . My opinion is that you can put an ivy with some roses on it. I think it's not so aggressive as a snake and also not too cute as a butterfly or something. You can also add an interesting phrase.

Hey there,
Is there a reason why you want a snake? I personally don't see snakes as being bad. As far as I'm aware the snake or serpent is considered quite high in the western spiritual belief system. (now, I have not researched that so don't quote me on that!)

You sound like you are unsure of what you would like added but if I were you I would go speak with your tattoo artist and see what suggestions he/she has...

I do not find anything offensive about the snake with your cross. I like the way you want to incorporate your past with the present! I have a tattoo of a flower that I got when my grandmother passed away. I have been thinking about having somehting done to it as well.....

A cobra would look really awful and it would turn guys off. My suggestion would be to leave it as is accept it as part of your past or adorn it with flowers around it. Flowers are feminine atleast and snakes will make you like you are anti-christ! The snake is symbolic for the devil, silly! Why do you think so many people into heavy metal have snake tatooes? One more suggestion, you could put someone's name by it that was close to you that has passed away.

God created all things... including snakes. If this is what you want to have added to it, go for it! I'm sure it will turn out beautiful. I wouldnt have the cross covered unless you no longer believe in God? Your relationship with God is just that ---> YOUR RELATIONSHIP. You define what that relationship is.
