With the budget you have mentioned I would recommend East Anglia. It is quiet and rural. The most important point is that it suffers from a "folksy" reputation. This has prevented the property values running away as they have done in most other parts of the UK. The quality of life is high and good schools can be found. Some locations there are an easy commute to London. Don't expect much for 900 Quid a month.
To better help you make your decision I recommend that you look at the history of questions of first person to answer this question, sidney vicious. Sadly his view of Americans is widely held by many English and Europeans.
Click on his avatar or this link to see his questions asked for yourself then decide if you could live amongst people who hold this opinion of Americans.

I stay in London at present, yet i'd a lot truly not sleep North. there is extra of it in section besides, no longer as overcrowded and claustrophobic, there is too a lot of a spotlight on the cost of London and the South. there is wonderful surroundings interior the North, the genuine District, the Lake District, the North Yorks moors, the Border united states of america are all extra obtainable. The air is that bit less warm and crisper. all the large cities grant extra or a lot less what London has to grant and are that bit friendlier. the commercial historic past is particularly thrilling. finally, what does it for me is, round Tyneside and Newcastle the musical traditions and the playing of the Northumbrian pipes. i have conventional some those who've moved up North from the South over the years, and they have all stayed and prefer it.

Doesn't it depend on your jobs?
I'd strongly recommend the South West if you have the kind of jobs that mean you can work anywhere (teacher, plumber, doctor, etc.) The schools are much better than in most parts of the country, the people are generally friendly and the houses are fairly cheap. You will definitely get one for the price you mention. It's a beautiful part of the country too. We are moving down there soon. There aren't that many jobs though.

Yarm in the north east, nice village, close to an international airport, large towns near by and a few top rated schools, plus you will get a nice house for that price range

it really depends on what work you expect to find. the price you suggest for accom rules you out of most of london and areas commutable to london..you could afford parts of london, but they prob arent considered 'good' areas.
like another answerer said, east anglia eg suffolk, norfolk, or try wales, west country (although some areas get pricy)
it is usually cheaper up north, yorkshire is nice
do you want city or rural??

South East Wales is nice, populated cities, not too big but Cardiff/Newport have a few 100,000 people living here, plenty of skilled jobs available and good quality of life.
