The best thing to do is get a training partner. )A friend or whatever to really push you to your limits).
however saying that, the best exercise is the real thing; are there any pick up games? if it's purely for exercise even pick up basketball will be more fun than just running.
however my (least) favorite exercises were
Jonesy. for this exercise think of the field as four lengths; one for each sideline.
1. jog all the way around all 4 sides,
2. sprint the first leg, jog the ramaining 3
3. sprint 2, jog the last 2
4. sprint 3, jog 1
5. spring all 4
this was called a suicide; always sprint down, run 80% back
sprint to the goalies box, jog back
sprint to the top of 18, then jog back
sprint to the tip of the bubble, jog back
sprint to halfway, jog back
now repeat for the other side of the field.
another exercise that really helps is go to a track and for 1 mile you alternate sprinting and jogging for each 100 ms
so the first 100 you sprint, then 2nd you jog, 3rd sprint and you will do this 16 times (assuming 400m track)

Try some strenght exercises: Squats, crunches, launches, and stretching exercises are very important! They will give you mobility.
Rope skipping is a hard job that will get your metabolism going like crazy, if you can do it fast enough. But be careful that you do not strain your knees and ankles.
Also, eat good quality carbohydrates to fuel you up. Protein for muscle build up, and a lot of veggies. Avoid fatty foods, and sugar. Watch what you drink, a lot of hidden sugar in many drinks.
Make sure you rest enough too.

If you can try inline skating it gives the legs/lungs a good workout and is alot more interesting than just running.
Breakfast don't eat anything too heavy like fry ups, things like porridge with chopped up banana in is good because it isn't very high in sugar so your body will soon start to burn fat.
On the day before the game eat spaghetti bolognese it gives you protein/carbs very good sourse of energy but don't forget to have
Tomatoes and other vegtables with it
Cross training
Skating (and road skating especially) is much more like cycling in terms of the muscles employed than like running. Cyclists and skaters commonly participate in each other's sport as cross-training. Runners often switch to road skating due to injuries associated with the impact of running. Many skiers use road skating for off-season and pre-season conditioning as well.
In addition, skating is an excellent cross training activity for a wide range of other sports due to the lateral (side to side) motion involved in the skating stride. For instance, consider how much lateral motion is involved in racquet sports, football, basketball, soccer, etc. Despite this, traditional cross training for these sports involves almost exclusively linear activities: running, swimming, cycling, leg presses, leg curls, etc. While research needs to be done to confirm and measure the effects, it seems likely that incorporating skating into cross training programs would reduce injuries and improve muscle-specific conditioning for sports that involve lateral motion.
