We feed him twice a day, morning and at 6pm. He gets lots of outdoor exercise and a final run before we go to bed. Unfortunately, he seldom makes it through the night without waking us up because he needs to go and relieve himself, sometimes more than once!!! Any suggestions? He's a great dog and we don't mind taking him out when he is desperate, but we could really do with a good night's sleep. HELP!!!

He's a German Shepherd, approx 4 years old (not sure exactly because he's a rescue dog). He's the right weight, full of energy and no health issues. We don't use a crate, because if he needs to go we would rather he woke us up to go outside. It's an interesting comment about his metabolic rate - he does like chasing rabbits late at night (don't worry, he can't catch them). Sometimes he makes it throught the night, most of the time he doesn't.

You cant stop the dog from drinking. Just think about what would happen if someone was to stop you from drinking! Sometimes there is nothing you can do about this. Think about how you feel in the night. Some times you just have to go!

Some dogs simply cannot hold their needs physically for over a certain amount of time. By exercising your dog right before bedtime you aare speeding up the metabolism which includes potty functions. As your dog gets older you should be able to sleep through the night. You may want to take up the water dish after 7pm and cut back on the exercise just before bedtime....although a sleepy dog is a good dog.

how much are you feed him? what kind of dog is he? Does he sleep in a crate at night? these things make a big difference. check with your vet on how much to feed the dog to keep his weight correct. and that might help the dog sleep all night long.

Limit fluids in the evening, just like a little kid. Keep him in a crate for training. good luck

If you can, feed him alittle earlier that way everything is digested, and take him right right before you go to bed and make sure he goes potty, that is what i had to do with my guy!
