no, they can't. i cancelled a DD last week and it was effective immediately.

It depends upon the agreement between you and the company. Some companies will allow a cancellation the day prior to a direct debit and some require longer.

No, I think! I did something similar a while ago & my bank told me that they had taken the money 1 day before I had cancelled it but they also told me that they could put it back in my account if I wished because it takes about a week to clear in someone elses account.
So you could try ringing your bank & see what they say

Yes they will, they apply for a direct debit three days before it is due. If you have to cancel another one make sure there is more than three days before it is due to come out.

Depends on which bank
At my bank i cancelled a dd on the day it was paid and got the funds retransferred back into my account - good old Barclays

They can still take it as they start the process a few days before the dd actually comes out of your account ( I found this out the hard way!!)

Day before might be too close to call. Generally banks need about 3-7 working days

YES, as I made the mistake last week, they need a min of 4 days to cancel it. sorry

they will take it my bank needs about 3 - 4 days notice
they should have told you that when u cancelled your direct debi

Think you need to do it a minimum of two days before it's due.
