I'm doing a 58 mile bike ride for the British Heart Foundation and having never ridden any long distance before wanted to know (approximately) how long it would take. I know different people cycle at different speeds, but an average would be good!
Many Thanks

I don't agree with most of what has been said, 58 miles in two hours means 30mph avg. even adding another hour you would still be looking at a 20mph avg. and that's a fast pace even on a high dollar carbon bike.
The average bicycle rider only will avg. about 15mph, that's not to say that there isn't riders that can't do 58 miles in three hours because there are those who can but they are not average riders. To be more realistic and enjoyable experience you're looking at 4 hour ride minimum for the average rider regardless of terrain. For you who has not ever ridden any long distance I would add another hour at least.
People need to know or figure out the difference between a running speed and an average speed.

I agree with some of what has been said. It would depend on your bike and physical fitness. Even so, 58 miles y two hours is pretty fast. I would add another hour and make it a more realistic and enjoyable experience.
If using a mountain bike, add another hour to what has been said before; so about 6 hours will be my guess.

Take care of yourself; hydration, energy food, appropriate clothing according to weather, and at least a spare inner tube and tools.

Enjoy the ride!

average if not rushing on a hybrid bike would be around 12-15 mph but if on a mountain bike slower or road bike faster. Your fitness levels will determine whether you can keep this speed up for 58 miles but allowing 4-5 hours should be plenty dependent on route and terrain if all uphill allow a little more time just in case and also allow time for maintenance in case you get a puncture.

Depends on your bike. If you are trying it on a mountain bike allow 5 hrs. A road bike will be a lot quicker and it is possible to do this distance in under 2 hrs. But a lot depends upon your fitness levels. Start pracicing now, but allow 4 hrs.

As a general rule, you will want to watch your hydration. Buy a reasonable sized Cammel Back from the US and fill it full go SIS Go. This will help stop you cramping. You will also want a few sports bars and, to get you up hills, a pocket full of Jelly Babies.

P.S. Your not the Northants based cops that are doing this in the Peak district are you? If so, contact:

You should be able to get some good advice there. Failing that, try Pitsford.

With no info about your fitness, the terrain, or the bike, I would say an average of 13 mph, so 4.5 hours?

maybe 15 or 20 mph for a normal bike rider. i have a speedometer on my bike, and that's usually my normal travel speed

it really depends on you the bike you have and the type of terrain i personally do downhill freeride and urban and urban is defiantly the slowest its possible to go 7-50mph on a bike so an average would be around 26 - 27 mph but thats just my point of view hope this helps you

My guess would be an average of 20MPH if there are lots of hills.

Also the weather will play a part in this. If it is wet you are likely to ride slower especially down hills and around corners.
