look at a used Ford Taurus. You should be able to afford a decent one. Good gas mileage, decent amount of room. and a reliable vehicle.

The Taurus of 2001 to 2003 is reasonably sporty looking.

Note: I chose a 2003 Taurus wagon on purpose for economy, roominess and ability to haul the stuff I want. The Taurus tends to be undervalued due to its "rental car" reputation.

Rental car companies like to buy reliable vehicles... lower maintenance costs. If they like a vehicle, then that should be considered a good thing.

What's wrong with older than 2001? For 5k you aren't going to find much, if anything, sporty that's 2001 or younger. I'd go with a late 90's Honda, Mazda, or Toyota. The Mazda Protege', which became the M3, is a sporty looking little car that gets pretty good gas mileage and packs some pretty mean horsepower for a 4 cylinder!
Steer clear of Ponitacs, Oldsmobiles, and Chevrolets!

For 5K you will easily be able to find a decent low mileage Astra SRi. Ok, I know its dull to look at but it handles superbly and is not a vandel magnet. It comes in 1.8, 2.0 and 2.2 flavours so plenty of power available. 2.2 may be just out of budget.
Alternatively, the SXi comes as a 1.6 and is cheaper. Vauxhalls abviously cheap to run and maintain.

Or the Focus Zetec is not a daft buy. Again, a fine handling car with better looks than the astra. 1.6, 1.8 or 2.0 litres, ST170 will be out of budget unless high mileage.

As a wild card, what about the Honda Accord Type-R? It will have to be a 99 or 2000 plate but much faster and within budget.

Is a Mondeo ST24 or ST200 sporty lookin? They certainly shift (petrol needle shifts downwards as well!!!)

Youll have trouble finding a "sporty"car thats a 2001+ for 5,000. You might get a cheap taurus for that much. Your going to have to settle for a older car. You could get a decent 1995-98 civic possibly. My advice is find a car for about 3g's and save, save, save.

I recommend a Seat Ibiza 1.8 T Cupra or the GTI i seen a couple in auto trader for under 5 grand. I currently own a Cupra and they are really good cars to drive and its been relialable to.The only thing is they are both about 1998-99 plates

If you only have that much to spend, I would recommend a Suzuki.

They are far cheaper but has many bells and whistles that more expensive cars have like aircon/heating, power steering, ABS, central locking.

My friend bought one and she really enjoyed driving it. Never gave her any problems at all.

The best thing is that you can buy the entire car cash with that money and not need to worry about monthly payments. It's yours and that is important.

"Rental car companies like to buy reliable vehicles..."

What a crock of BS.

No, Rental car companies like to buy CHEAP vehicles that are discounted heavily. And the Taurus fits that criteria especially when you got FORD practically giving them away. And who is their best client? HERTZ.... which is owned by, you guessed it, FORD. So why wouldn't they buy their own products?

And do you know why the Taurus was the #1 best seller all those years? Because 50% of the sales were to rental companies, compared to 10% for Toyota Camry and 5% for Honda Accord.

Btw, I rented a brand new Taurus once.... it was CRAP. The fuel gauge didn't even work and I barely got 20mpg when comparable Camry and Accord gets 27mpg.

Personally, I would take the 5G and put as down pmt on a new car (if at all possible).

Some years ago, we came into some money and spent 9G on a used car only to have transmission go out a year later and cost 3G to fix.

We would have done better to put that money toward a new one (which we had to buy for 17G) and had a small pmt with warranty

My best recomendation would be something along the lines of a Grand Am. They're a bit higher priced then 5k for an '01, but you can fit 3 children in back and it is sporty. I suggest a 4 door simply because it seemed to have x-tra room (front to back)

You can't really get 3 back seats and "very" sporty looking, but it depends on your tastes. Try a decent sized-saloon. A Mini Cooper has 2 seats in the back and a Land Rover will cost you a bomb in petrol. Avoid all 4x4s for that reason.
