It is a very odd situation. Monkey is "singe" and Ape is "grand singe" in French, except when you are talking about a female ape, in which case the word is "la guenon".
Vive la différence!

Yeah, as a person who has studied some primatology it annoys me a bit. It may be worth remembering though that many languages don't have a separate word for apes and monkeys, French or Thai for example just have the one name that I suppose would be something like our 'primate'. My wife for example is Thai and was hugely confused by my annoyance when she called gibbons monkeys when we were up in Khao Yai observing them.
