I filed a return in MA 2 weeks ago with 7,200 income paid in cash from babysitting in my home. I have now receivd a letter of intent to assess for MA DOR. Why and how should I respond? Also, I already received my federal return which was given due to Earned Income Credit. Is this going to be questioned by IRS also?

Why should you respond? Because they'll assess the taxes stated in the letter if you don't. How to respond? Call them first. Or file a return or amended return for the tax year in question.

Without seeing the letter, it's not possible to say what they are claiming. The letter should explain the whole thing; read it.

It's not likely that this is for the current tax year. Normally they don't start reviewing them until after the filing deadline to give taxpayers time to correct errors themselves and file amended returns.

At any rate, you need to read the letter completely to see what they are claiming. You didn't provide the details so anything anyone here says would be pure speculation.
