My friend who has a son with ADHD recently told me they just handed the kid drugs and only did 30 mins of testing and I get the feeling she isn't telling the full truth.

Assessment can occur very rapidly depending on the setting - all that is necessary is for the doctor to feel confident that the presentation of the child is consistent with the criteria for ADHD in at least two different settings - i.e. knowing that the child's behaviour is uniformly impaired not just at home but also at school, thus implying a person who's impaired regardless of the environment. The child needs regular testing however and your friend should be encouraged to bring them back for followup regularly.

Some important information on ADHD

ADHD is Highly Over diagnosed!!

Think about this fact:
After 20 minutes of inactivity one's brain quits learning effectively.

This makes sense when we look at kids who have to sit for at least an hour at a time (if not longer). They get agitated, move around, aren't able to focus. All these are symptoms of ADHD and yet can be explained simply by the fact I listed above.

Psychology website on ADHD, it's prevalance, and it's overdiagnosis.

OK, mind you this was about 15 yrs ago. When i was having problems w/ him, it was before he started kindergarden but, i had taken him to DR's and told the Dr. what was going on and he said... wait till he starts kindergarden and then we will get a review from the teacher and go from there. so we did then we made an app. for DR. and i told him how my son was behaving, going from one thing to another, not finishing anything he started and acting out not keeping himself in control ...etc. But, I have heard that a lot of Dr. are handing over meds w/ out a proper evaluation, and the pills they give for ADHD are pretty narcotic, i had to have a tri slip perscription.

For my daughter, she was questioned some, but questionnaires were given to me, my husband, and her teachers.
