Originally it meant a man of refinement. He would have to be somewhat wealthy, a landowner, because refinement came with education and the lower classes were uneducated. Over time, it came to mean a person who behaves in a certain way, has certain manners.

Sadly, it's not that easy to find one these days.

It comes from the Olde English, with titles of nobility as Duke, or Archbishop,,,

If a person had no social or military rank, they were refered to as "Goodman"- gentlemen is simply a modified version of this word after some 600 years, and its plural
