have to go to the registry office to sign documents in order to make the state know that we are a married couple to be?I don't know how it's called here but in Italy we go to the registry office to do this before the actual religious ceremony and it's called "pre-marriage promise". The priest over here made us sign some paper last time we met and we are also going to have an engaged couple course within few weeks. Can you please help me? I would like to know as I don't want to risk us not to be recognised from the state as a married couple!

We had to go through the same process to get married in France.

Our local registrar was very helpful. We ended up getting married in the registry office at home, then a church service in France.

I think the church in France can perform a marriage but it is not recognised by the state.

the registry office is so that the marriage is recognised by the state(legal in the eyes of the law)and the church is so the marriage is legal in the eyes of the church. As for the papers you signed all couples have to sign them and do the engaged couple course(per marriage course)is what i know it as.I know this we had to do the same when we got married in Hawaii

You should talk to your local marriage office. They have to recognize your marriage (its against the law not to), but I don't know if there will be extra hoops or not!
