First, check the Recycle bin. If they are there, right click on them and restore them.

If not, check in the "All Programs" section of the Start Menu. There may be an icon to the program you are trying to reach still on the menu. Most programs will put one icon in each place. If so, just right click on it, do a "copy" and then right click and "paste" it on the desktop.

If not, you will have to recreate the icon. Go into My Computer and open your local hard drive (C:). Usually under the "Program Files" directory you will find a folder that has the program you are wanting to start. Look in that folder for a file that ends with ".exe", or is listed as the file type "application". Double click the files and it should start the program. Once you find the file you need, right click on it, and do a "copy". Then go to the desktop and do a "paste shortcut" (not just a "paste"). That will recreate the icon.

You can also restore your pc settings to a previously saved date. Back up any new work, reset and your icons should be there.
