If the server is consistently slow and/or forgetful, sadly, yes, decrease the tip. But if this is the only complaint, ease up. Servers often have a lot of other responsibilities as well. If the restaurant is empty, they are also probably trying to complete their side and cleaning duties. Give them a break, they're working really hard. Besides, when a customer orders dessert, it usually means they will linger for a while.

If that's the only thing he did wrong, no--I'd give the same tip assuming the rest of the service was good. If he was consistently slow getting me everything (my food, drink refills, the check, etc.) I'd leave a smaller tip, yes.

Besides--if I have time for dessert, that means I'm probably not in a hurry to get out of there, so that's really no reason to leave him a smaller tip.

Most of the time it is not their fault they take a long time. Just think about it. Going back there to get the things takes no time at all. But most of the time they have a lot of other things to be doing so they get caught up before they can come back. The only bad thing is if they have a bad memory and forget to bring the items you asked for....one reason I won't become a waiter again...bad memory.

i always walk in planning on leaving a 25% tip, if it is an evening outing. But poor service, bringing things too slowly, or too quickly, etc will definitely decrease the tip, although I will usually still end up leaving 15%, just b/c some places pool tips and you never know which ones they are unless you ask.

Definitely it will reduce the tip.
Still tip, but not nearly as much as I would have. Say down from 15% to 10%.

I always give them the benefit of the doubt.
Did he get called to the phone? Didi his boss ask for something to
be done? Did he get interrupted for an emergency?
