This is from Animal Planet. You answer a series of questions and the it lists then breeds that best match the answers you give. I've taken it bofore and it gave me a 97% match to mini schnauzers, which I already have and adore.

It sounds like you are looking for just about any toy breed. As a previous poster mentioned, a dog is only well behaved if you train it to be well behaved. No dog will behave correctly if you don't train him or her. A toy dog won't need much exercise since they are so small. They will obviously poo less too since they won't eat as much. All dogs shed, but some less than others. You can train all dogs not to dig, but some breeds will be harder than others. For example, a mini dachshund is going to be nearly impossible to train not to dig. They were bred to dig into and hunt down animals such as moles in their burrows. A small dog isn't going to have a loud bark, but some will bark more. Check for those with alarm/guard dog backgrounds. For example, a lhasa apso was bred as an alarm dog. They will bark anytime someone/thing approaches the house. Check the AKC website for suggestions. They have plenty of info about all breeds. Once you decide they can refer you to a good breeder in your area.

As others have said -- a well-behaved dog is trained to be so. They don't come naturally that way, just as well-behaved children don't. You have to TRAIN your dog to behave the way you want to.
As for not shedding...poodles. Poodles do not shed, though you'll occasionally find little balls of hair around. Hairless breeds also wouldn't shed (Chinese Crested, etc.). You can also find a list of light shedders here: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/lightshedders.htm

My dear! All dogs need exercise, they all need stimulation. They all need training. Also, short coats don't necessarily mean less hair around the place. Small dogs can equal badly behaved if you treat them like a human baby.

I have a Jack Russell Terrier and she is the best dog I've ever had!!! She's playful when I want to play, she loves to be outdoors but doesn't mind curling up on the couch w/me on a chiily day. She will dig like CRAZY because she loves to hunt moles and mice, but she knows to stay out of the garden or I'll turn her into fertilizer!! But if you want a loyal, loving, caring, playful, energetic best friend type of dog, I recommend a JRT!!! I know I couldn't live w/o mine!! Good Luck!!

A stuffed animal, live ones require attention, grooming, exercise and cleanup.
If you want a real good friend, a Golden Retriever would be my choice
