Take a look into the future and the precedent this could set.
I think there needs to be intervention-the child is morbidly obese. But to remove the child-take the child from his family? I can see parents who would withold food from their child for fear of losing them.
As horrid as this is, it is not the government's job to regulate the weight of citizens.

If the parents arent doing anything to correct it and are making it worse than yes.
Kids get taken away all the time for being underfed & denied food-I dont really see the difference.
Dr Phil did a show on this not too long ago and there was some 3/4 year old that weighed 200 or close to it. The mother had taken the child to many many drs and swore up & down it wasnt what the child was being fed, it was medical. She refused to taken even the slightest bit of responsibilty for her son's condition and she was in total denial. Well as a result of the show the father (who did not live w the mother) was able to obtain custody of the child and big surprise in the father's care the child who is now 8 wieghs 75lbs. less than he did at 3/4 - he is still a little chubby but nothing extreme.

I think in a way it is. A child of eight cannot possibly be 200lbs if is being fed the right food in the right portions. Unless this child has a proven medical condition which explains the weight, then I think his parents have been neglectful. As a parent, it is your responsibility to oversee a child's health and make sure they aren't suffering and when a child is that obese, they can't possibly by as healthy and happy as a child that isn't and that is a case of them not doing their job properly in raising the child.
I don't think the child should be taken away forever, by any means, however, I do think the child should be temporarily removed from their custody while they are given the necessary information they need to monitor their childs eating and exercising problems so that the can avoid any adverse effects in the future. With proper training and insight, monitoring etc, there is not reason why they shouldn't regain custody.

The article states that taking him away is the last resort. Apparently, meetings were set up with the parent to try to help but were all "no shows". The mother obviously has some serious issues and sounds unstable. Overweight or not, the child should not be with an unstable parent.

There will be so many factors before the child is separated from parents. First of all i suppose the court must have ruled out medical causes of over eating or probably overweight. Secondly instead of taken away the child should be sent for rehabilitation for dietary control if it is due to over eating or neglect of parents. Yes i suppose parents should be reprimanded for such mistakes , but taking away the child is really extreme step. They should think again of their decision.

I would take the child away ,and charge the parents for attempted murder of that child ...so what if the child says he wants to eat that much ..it is not the child's choice , to eat what he wants ..Parents have the Duty ,and Responsibility to that child . They have full control of the child until he becomes an adult . that means until he is an adult the parent makes the decisions for that child after all they are responsible for everything involving that child until adulthood ....... there is no justifiable excuse for stupid ....It is a shame the parents were so neglectful that the government had to step in , it is wrong that the govt. has to put the child somewhere to teach him how to eat healthy these parents should have done it , as far as Kelly2459 comment you are right it is not right for the Govt. to regulate the weight of their citizens ..BUT this is a child who has adults that are 100% responsible for him until he is a legal adult , until a child is an adult they are not legally allowed to make up their own minds ...and make decisions until they are an adult ...until then they are their parents responsibility

In this boy's case, the mother knows that her child is severely overweight and has been offered help in which she refused! If you are a parent with an overweight child and are aware of the problem, and do nothing about it then yes it is abuse.

Am I the only person who sees the larger picture in this mess? It takes something like obesity, and the resulting financial burden an overweight society places on the health care system. It is totally politically motivated.
If anybody really cared about child abuse, then we would make more of an effort to get truly devastatingly abused kids out of their homes. Instead of focusing on the millions of kids who are mentally, physically, sexually, and spiritually molested, beaten and attacked on a daily basis in our countries (U.S. ESPECIALLY) we are wasting our time on some overfed fat kid. Yes, the kid needs help and so does the mom, but I would much rather we spend this effort on families who REALLY know what abuse and neglect looks like.

I dont think the kid should be taken away hes only 8 and probably doesnt know that being that overweight could kill him therefore not his fault and taking him away would be punishing him. I think the mother should get help like dietry info etc... and maybe someone to monitor them to see if things are improving or not.

i don't understand your son or you in my opinion of course, yet Diets tend to in good shape extra effective to the guy particularly then being pressured upon them, i think of you are able to seek for suggestion out of your son approximately it, any city or city midsection could have a nutritionist to seek for suggestion from, they might help your son come across a weight loss plan that suits him, and as for exercises, in basic terms a pastime like base ball will not be sufficient as exercising, good finished physique exercises would comprise swimming, runnning, boxer-cise and so on. i'd fantastically propose Boxer-cise, in case you will come across a set at an area wellbeing club it is an extremely rewarding, quickly paced sort of exercising, and in case you prefer to work out effects then that's in all probability the thank you to pass, i'd say which you would be able to start up doing an hour each and every week for a pair of month or so and then advance 2 days each and every week 3 days each and every week and so on. yet each and all of the exercising interior the international won't make a difference if he would not have the splendid weight loss plan, it relies upon the way you prefer him to shed some pounds, he can shed some pounds by using weight-reduction plan, or exercising. the splendid weight loss plan can assist you to shed some pounds continuously (low calorie intake and so on) yet a great work out demands a greater calorie intake (yet not under ANY situations junk nutrition, I recommend carbohydrates, proteins and so on) a nutritionist can clarify extra advantageous, yet i'm afraid i will not be able to help lots.
