Yes they do, in my experience it is better to take them a little earlier and then make sure you have the 8 hours you need. If the sleeping time is shorter than they will not have worn off yet and getting out of bed can be rather like coming around from anaesthetic.

Sometimes that depends on how much time you had to sleep. For example, if you know you have to be up in 3 hours, then taking a sleeping pill may not be a good idea. Just from what I have read you need to be able to get in about 8 hrs, by the time you are waking up the sleeping pill has worn off. Yes, I tried it both ways and if I take a sleeping pill and have to get up in a few hours it is like I am digging my myself up out of a grave. Another thing is the sleeping pill could be too strong for your system and that is what is making it so difficult to get up. I had that same problem as well, when my doctor changed my meds I felt alot better.

I take an other the counter sleep aid and it doesn't wear off for 18 hours. But the prescription sleeping pills are only supposed to last 7-8 hours letting you get enough sleep and wake up without groggyness

The effects usually wear off in 8 hours...if you don't have at least 8 hours you should not take them. After 8-10 hours you should wake up easily and well rested.

It depends on what you take and your metabolism and a few other things. A herbal treatment like Doux Calma will have you awake and ready to go by morning. Others will have you awake by noon and ready to go by 4pm.
