i only ask because my brother was hit from behind by a driver of white van using a mobile phone on the motorway(he wasn't hurt),the driver of the van threw the phone into bushes by hard shoulder.
Another driver saw him do this and reported it to the police,

is awaiting prosecution.

Good question.

I think that increasing the penalties is a good idea, even if they're not strict enough, but it's ultimately an empty gesture without the police to enforce it.

You ask the correct Q. Your completely right the police don't have a chance. All they are doing is using the old classic intimidation tactics by the servere fine as they full well know they don't have the resources to administrate such a task. Even if a police car drives past, someone puts the phone down, your telling me a police car will turn round when they are going to investigate something? The hipe will die away & we will be back to sq one. Your bro is lucky there was witnesses. At the end of the day the police are facing a losing battle which they know but they wont say this of course. Matey, just wait, in time it will be seen as a social outcast thing to do & it will be people's concisous & good phone deals (money saving) that will enforce this effect of no phones while driving & blue tooth a must. The police think we are stupid, good luck with your bro, matey go 4 compensation.

I have to say that I am in agreement with the stricter penalties for mobile phone users on British roads. Almost everytime I see cars making mistakes on the road, it ends up that they have a phone in their hand, and it's only thanks to those that are paying attention that more accidents do not occur. This is besides the annoyance of being stuck behind someone on their phone at lights/junctions etc.... I would like to add though that taking this further to include smokers or someone eating a sweetie would be a step too far.....hopefully the law makers will use a little common sense for a change and stop at the phones. As regards to how these new laws can be enforced....with so many camera's set up along our roads today it has been made easier for 'big brother' to fine you from behind his desk.

More and more spy cameras. Especially if they can find a way to not only identify the car and the number plate, but also the mobile number, while recording all the details for a follow up visit, with the evidence, to the home.
Failing that, the driver will get off scot free until he/she has an accident, in which case (if still alive) the use of a mobile will become top of the list, with sub headings of reckless driving, dangerous driving, driving with due care and attention and so on.

I fully agree that the penalties should be much harsher. I ride a motorbike and see lots of idiot car drivers on phones driving dangerously. You're right though, i hardly ever see a police car driving around, the only times i see them are parked at the side of the road with no cops in sight. I'm in the South West of the UK if that makes a difference, pretty sure it's the same all over the UK.

They will enforce the laws by looking at CCTV cameras and sending you a piccy of yourself driving whilst phoning. It is the tip of the iceberg in draconian methods of funding a police state. They may employ extra snooper police to follow and photo you, after all how many £60's can you collect in a day, I can imagine that people may fight back along the lines of Capn Gatso. Whilst I agree that the use of mobile phones whilst driving is dangerous, a lot of the police methods in attacking motorists are dangerous as well. What about police who use their radios whilst driving? I believe it is just another revenue gathering stealth tax.

It is the UK. Whilst I hate the plethora of Laws / prohibitions Labour can't stop making I agree with this one.

You can buy a hands free kit for £20 these days and still go on using your phone.

It is genuinely dangerous to use your phone whilst driving and people have been ignoring the fine.

Well, near me there is a van full of police checking everyone driving into a local roundabout from a blind entrance. This makes me hate the police with even more passion than I do at the moment.

Which planet do you live on? I'll move there. No police around? B.S.
IMHO any one caught using a mobile whilst driving, or to be driving under the influence of drink or drugs should lose their licence. Skip the points basis. A loss of licence - permanently.
That would put a stop to all the morons.

If you go through a speed camera with one and if flashes you is one way. Also it's more the deterrant; If you were going to be fined one pound but only had a 1% chance of being caught per journey, you'd probably do it, but if you still sood a 1% chance of being detected, but if they caught you they'd execute you, then no one would. I suppose the hope is that with stricter penalties fewer people will chance it.
