I believe you are thinking of butternut squash. It comes as is (it's a variety of squash), and is in season in winter. You should be able to get some now, though the season is probably ending soon.

Most cans of "pumpkin" filling that you make pumpkin pie with are actually butternut squash.

Butter squash is simply yellow squash. There is a variety of butternut squash. There are tons of ways to prepare, boil, fry, grill, make into a soup. However I dont know of any ready to eat products. I would not suggest eating squash raw. I have attached a receipe for you..

Dill and Butter Squash

INGREDIENTS
2 sliced zucchini
2 yellow squash
1/4 cup butter
salt and pepper to taste
2 teaspoons dried dill weed
1 tablespoon lemon juice
DIRECTIONS
Slice the zucchini and yellow squash. Place the sliced vegetables in a large skillet or saucepan with the butter. Saute over a medium-low heat for 10 minutes before seasoning with salt, pepper and dill.
Continue to saute for 10 additional minutes before adding the lemon juice. Stir the vegetables well and remove from heat. Serve hot.

Butter squash is a vegetable, like any other squash. At your market, it should be named that. It has a smoother, creamier texture, hence it's name. You cook it at home, yes, but I have never seen it pre-made at any store. It isn't popular enough for it to be pre-made.

Butternut squash is a light beige, medium sized, hard skinned squash. You can find them in supermarkets and farmers markets.
They can be boiled, baked, fried, and microwaved. They are an excellent source of vitamins and beta carotene.

you must first cook it; cut in half, remove seeds, put a little butter and some brown sugar on top, bake in the oven for about an hour at 400 degrees, or untill soft and golden bown. I don't know anywhere that you can buy it prepared, unless you are at a reastaraunt, or you buy it in soup form.

Are you sure you don't mean butternut squash? That's a type of squash, you just buy it, nothing has to be done to it.
