It depends on how serious it is. Usually it's something that can be gotten over. If it causes financial ruin or anything, perhaps you can sue them. But otherwise, the best thing is to get over it and not let a grudge ruin your life. I've found that the effects usually aren't as far reaching as we think they are when we are in the situation, though. However, when I carried a grudge, I found that ruined a lot of other relationships, etc. until I finally let it go.
Let your true self be known. People identify who you are and how you treat them personally more than anything else.
And by the way, my family has had a lot of cases where they could've and possibly should've sued people for things they've done but didn't do so. I've found it's been really good for me to grow up in that family. I really felt proud of my parents because I knew they were here to do good and not just to get everything out of someone or to strike back at anyone. It really has helped my life to be happy, and it gave me something to live up to.

There are two types of law, criminal and civil. Defamation of charactor is not a criminal matter and you cannot have someone arrested for it.
Every type of case has rules for evidence - you must meet the requirements before a legal preceeding takes place. It's extremely difficult to prove defamation so even if you took the person to small claims court, it would probably be thrown out.
Unfortunately, you can't just go into court and say someone spread lies about you and expect to win. Even witnesses wouldn't be enough.

I believe "Defamation of Character" is a Civil matter. Sue the breaches off them and enjoy spending there money. Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will make me rich. Ya gotta love the legal system.

Defamation of character is a civil matter so you would need to seek an attorney, present the details, et cetera, and he/she would be able to tell you whether you have cause for a lawsuit.

Consider the source and let it go. Now , if it is costly to you, you can sue for defamation of character or slander. But you need a local attorney to advise you.

As peah said, you can't have someone arrested for that, it's not a criminal offense. It is civil and because of that only you can do something about it. If you think it is worth it to get and pay for a lawyer, miss work for court dates and everything then go for it. If you don't think it's worth it, forget about it and ignore them. Truly it's up to you.

If it is detrimental to your business or way of life then take legal action. Going the legal way is costly and usually not very affective unless this person cost you or your business. Then they are liable for lost income and stress.

Here in Canada, you would get a lawyer and sue them in civil court. This is not a criminal/police matter.
