In the early days of the printed word, printers designed their own styles of typeface. The typefaces (or fonts, as they became to be known,) were named after their designers. One famous designer was Garamonde. In imitation of this style, there is a computer font called "Gourmand" to avoid copyright infringement. Modern fonts that do not imitate traditional designs can be called whatever their designers like.
