maybe he does like you but he wants to make sure that you like him back. since you're friends for 5 years, why don't you ask him but if it gets weird for him pretend it was a joke. haha. at least you know!

maybe he do's just tell him you have feelings for him he shouldnt over react to it the most he'll say if its a no is " i just want to be friends " .
remember theres plenty of other fish in the sea if he knocks you back.

Well it happens everywhere, you should let him know about it, moreover you've known him for 5years, so he's not gon bite you even if he refused..
