Melbourne, way more things to see and do, also closer to other places such as Hobart, Sydney, Adelaide and Canberra are all an hour flight, Goldcoast is a 2 hour flight.
Melbourne is a beautiful city, I suggest that if you visited Melbourne you would want to stay as there is heaps more to do here.
I am not saying the Perth isn't nice, but Melbourne has a lot more going on and more to see and do.

I love Perth. It is where I grew up and still live. Everything I need is here. That said, I love Melbourne. I am going for a holiday as soon as I can and will probably need to be dragged back.
Melbourne is where my heart is but everything else is in Perth. How can I choose?

Your question is vague but I will assume your looking to visit one or the other. Perth is beautiful, clean and a excellent place to go.
Melbourne has more variety of things to do in a smaller area. Depending on when you go the weather can be tricky. I suggest you go to the Great Ocean Road if you decide to visit the Melbourne area and like small town charm and great views.
There is a free e-book at letsgotoaustralia.com if your looking for more detailed info.

Perth, just because it is so far from civilisation. Its almost as easy and cheap to go to Singapore than Melbourne. That's another plus!

Cooee Troy! Dunno where you live mate - but have you ever seen the sun rising from the wrong direction? If not I reckon you should go to Perth! Can't say you've seen the place til you've seen both sides of it - hey? It's bloody beautiful over there - it's as diverse and as wonderful as it is on the east side. The people are great - it's a long way between places - but you are on holiday aren't you? You will see things that you'll NEVER see anywhere else. The heat is DRY; so you don't sweat your shirt off. So, either way you go from Perth (north or south i.e.), it's 'different' and you will know it. And it doesn't get much better than that! Safe journey.

Perth!!! it is BY FAR the most beautiful city in australia - and all that rubbish about it being too far from anything is crap - that's half it's charm! and in this day and age nothing is too far from anything - you can get almost anywhere in the world in a matter of hours.
If you do chose Perth, please take the time to visit Mandurah - it is about an hour south of Perth and well worth the visit, gorgeous place, great food, people, beaches...

Perth is a fine city but it is is too far from civilisation. It is 4000km from Sydney and nearly that far from Melbourne. If you want to see more of Australia than the remote southwest, don't go to Perth.
