We were invited to a posh spring do - black tie and all !
Invitation says - carriages at 1 AM.
What does this mean ? I can't ask Maam to lend her carriage - she won't - please help

It means make sure that your lift arrives to take you home at 1am.
Come 1.05am the hosts will be tromping upstairs with their hot water bottles and Horlicks!

quite simply ;
your transport home, should arrive to pick you up at 1 am
In the olden days, it would have meant your carriage
would be there to pick you up, and drive you home at 1am
these days it could mean a coach ( bus) should arrive at 1am.
to take you home .
or if you are very grand,
your chauffeur + limousine, Should be there for 1am (pick up)
or a Taxi should be arranged, to pick you up at that time
It may seem like a bit of a palaver ,
Its a way of telling you ---The party is over
and you should all be ready, to say goodnight and go home

A posh way to say that 1Am is the time to go home. In old times the guests would arrange for their carrages to arrive at the end of an event.

I guess (if possibly a long-shot) it could also mean that you have to give the moving part of a type-writer in at 1am ... possibly to avoid any of those funny stories (and often mildly embarrasing) that happen during these do's escaping before they are formally approved.

Carriages at 1.00am means that's your kicking out time! If you can't find a carriage, suggest you book at taxi!

Simple answer is that the do finishes at 1am, so make sure your lift is ready and waiting outside at this time.

It means this is when they would like you to leave - probably because the venue has to close. I would laso take it to mean that taxis have been booked, but most likely you would still have to pay for them.

Just means that the gig finishes at 1:00am so that is the time for your chauffeur to pick you up...(or get the bus!).

It means that that is the time the event closes and transport will be at 1am.
