Actually I am not sure of this answer but I heard or maybe read it somewhere in the bible or heard it in some homily. I think that lucifer or satan was one of the most powerful angels. He was told to serve Jesus, Who is both God and Man. Satan said he "will not serve". It is referred to as his "non serviam". This is his pride. When we do not want to serve God, this is pride. when we want to do our own will this is pride also. So angels are different from men. When angels do something, they know the consequences of their actions. They have intuition or intuitive knowledge. Lucifer or satan knew that if he refused to serve Jesus, he will be cast into hell for all eternity. He knew he would burn in hell. He knew the consequences of his actions. And yet, he still refused to serve God and do God's will. So yes he did not want to do God's will. He wanted to do his own will. He is also jealous of men. He wants us to be where he is, so he keeps tempting us and puts so many obstacles to our salvation. Men are different. We do not know as angels know. We do not have intuitive knowledge. So God forgives us for our sins. So satan does not want us to ask pardon from God so he keeps us away from confession or the sacrament of reconciliation and maybe from being baptized also. Satan did rebel against God. I also heard there was a war in heaven. St. Michael was the head of the good angels and Lucifer was the head of the bad angels. St. Michael obeyed and served God. St. Michael won and he is shown as the most powerful enemy of satan, next to God or Jesus and Mary.

There was a great council in Heaven and God asked us if we wanted to have bodies and families and come to earth. We all said yes. Satan came up with a plan that allowed forced everybody to do good and so we would have no agency and he wanted all the glory and none to go to God. Christ then said that he would alow us to choose and when we mess up we can choose to repent and he paid for the sin and all glory be to Heavenly Father. Satan rebelled and was kicked out of heaven and he took many bad spirits with him as well. (That is the simplifyed version) See Job 38:7, Isaiah 14:13 Luke 10:18, Revelation 12:7 or ask a mormon missionary for the book of the mormon that also speaks about it.

Honestly, satan is not in hell at this time. He is here on earth deceiving people and trying to turn them from God. He is going to be sent there for rebelling and jealousy. It's a long story, but to make it really short he wanted to be God and it just didn't work out like that.

Satan is not in Hell at the moment. His fall was caused by pride, the first sin. He wanted to be God and so he rebelled against Him.
The Bible is very clear on where Satan is at the moment, he is in one of two places, standing before the throne of God pointing his finger at YOU, accusing you of evil, or he is walking to and fro on the earth seeking whom he may devour.

It was pride. Pride is something that hides in us and can bring even the biggest servants of God down. Satan was the same, God called him the most beautiful, such was his standing but he forgot how small and insignificant he was compared to God his creator.
We often make the mistake of over estimating ourselves, and then tread on dangerous ground when God out of His divine love has given us the opportunity to live a life totally depending on Him.

Satan walks around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. Satan is here and is very much doing the work he does best. He comes to kill, steal and destroy. He is working in the world today because he knows his time is short and he will be one day cast into the lake of fire at the last judgment. Until then he is free to roam the earth.

observe: no longer in effortless words that, yet God ought to will Hell and devil away in a microsecond if he wanted to. also, being that he's the author, and that he's omniscient (all seeing/all understanding), he's commonplace with earlier he creates a non-believer, that they are going to be a non-believer, and spend an eternity in Hell being tortured once they die. fantastically awesome of him. also, God did not absolutely grant you with loose will, notwithstanding the phantasm of it. If he's omniscient, he's commonplace with each thing you'll do, say or imagine earlier you're even born, that means that there is not any longer some thing you could absolutely do to modify the top result. As for fairness, the following is an previous conserving that my dad used to apply a lot- life's a ***** and then you die.

Angels have no free will, no angel was ever sent to hell, it's a story to help create the second easy excuse for people doing bad things, after " my sins are paid for with jesus" comes "satan made me do it"....
