As long as we are in the lower worlds (the physical world for example) there can never be absolute purity in anything, even religion.
The degree of spirituality in any religion is determined by its connection with the Holy Spirit; the stronger, the more spiritual the religion is. But when the original leaders of a religion are changed for whatever reasons and the new leaders lose the connection with the Holy Spirit, then your guess is as good as mine. The new leaders sometimes resort to the old writings and dictates of the original leaders, other times they just formulate new ideas that will keep the followers in line. Unfortunately, these writings and dictates continue to get less and less relevant with time because of the lost connection with the Holy Spirit. If the connection is maintained however, then the original writings and dictates must of necessity change to fit the current consciousness of the people, even though the message remains the same. So, either way, the teachings may change, and purity becomes a matter for discussion.
But then, religions still serve some useful purpose in the sense that there is always one that fits an individual's consciousness. When it is time to move on to another religion, the Holy Spirit (not a human being or a group) has Its ways to let the person concerned know.

The best way to keep religion pure would be to make sure that the beliefs line up with scripture.

The objective of religion being the domination of many by a few, religion is not "pure" to begin with. It has never been, it will never be.

What this is in fact asserting is that a genuine walk with God exhibits itself in basic, functional approaches. It helps the needy, and keeps itself unstained by utilising the international’s corruption. this is significant ... Many great men and females of God have lost their calls, their ministries and their earthly destinies in the Lord because of the fact they violated this trouble-loose, necessary, basic sense rule and revelation from the Lord. i stumble on it very thrilling that James places protecting oneself loose from the international’s pollution precise there with looking after orphans and widows! That organic faith will bring about an entire life of functional benevolence; and that it will keep us unspotted from the international.

I think that all religion could be improved by TOLERANCE. By accepting that you are not in the sole possession of the sole "truth". By accepting that other people have other opinions, other lifestyles, and other beliefs, and that they are not worth any less or more than yourself. By abstaining from imposing your opinions and beliefs on others.

The trick is not to take the bible or other sacred texts so literally. Alot of things in it are symbolic and alot of the moral code in it has good, sound reasoning behind it. Figure out these reasons, and follow those reasons instead of the code and you will be fine.

Keep religion pure?! Ha! You'd have to take people out of it. Really. We are corrupt and taint everything.

That cycle is called apostasy in the bible. The only way to combat it is with a Prophet to teach us through on going revelation. If we asume God stops speaking to us then we follow our own paths and our relgion gets corupted. See Amos 3:7

Keep? It never was. There is no pure religion.
The reason that religions keep changing is because society keeps changing. Also, there are no real gods to set people straight.

BY doing, observing the rituals/tradition of your religion. Also, it has to be from the heart, for others and that's it.
