I personally feed the raw diet, but this diet is not always the best to go for all people. I recommend lots of research on this diet first before considering it.

Innova, canidae, wellness, solid gold, california natural, dick van pattens formula are some really good all natural no corn no filler dog foods. These foods are made out of natural ingrediants and are healthy for your dog.

science diet like someone mentioned is just an overpriced over rated junk food. It is recommended by vets because they get a profit on what they sell.

beneful is a cheap junk food. You midas well feed your dog twinkies than to feed this food. It says natural but the ingrediants on the bag will tell u that it is junk.

Basically any dog food u buy at your vet and local grocery and walmart are JUNK. They all have fillers and not good ingresiants to feed your dog.

Eukanuba it is not the far worst dog food there is but it is not the far best either. It has alot of fillers and bad junk also.

One that's not sold at the grocery store. Many foods even the popular Science Diet have corn as a primary ingredient which is FILLER. Ask yourself if YOU really digest corn. Look for something with meat, not meat by product and named meats; ie. lamb, chicken, beef. I would suggest something by Natura Pet, Canidae, Solid Gold of Blue Buffalo if you have it available near you. In the end the "best" is the healthiest food your dog likes to eat. It does no good if he/she won't eat it. Also look at the ingredient labels. Pet foods can be presevered naturally with ingredients like Rosemary instead of the chemicals. There's also the skin and coat to remember. Omega oils and flaxseed are excellent for this. When I've fed foods without these ingredients my smooth coat dogs look like someone dumped an ashtray on them.
Go to http://www.naturapet.com/display.php?d=comp-wiz
they have a fabulous product comparision that will tell you what's in each food so you can compare brands and find a good one that will work for you. Remember that with the "higher quality" foods you often have to feed less so that sticker shock you will have at the store doesn't always translate to the bowl. I was feeding 2 cups per day of a Purina brand and now feed 1 cup of Canidae. Both dogs look good, have lots of energy and its not costing my any more $ for what I consider a healthier food. The less going in also means less coming out. That corn filler and other grains that are used to add bulk to food just come back out and you get to clean it up. ;)
Good info happy camper! My male has seizures but for more odd reasons that even listed on that site!

Here's some info on Beneful that seems to popular..
1. Ground Yellow Corn; 2. Chicken Byproduct Meal; 3. Corn Gluten Meal; 4. Whole Wheat Flour; 5. Beef Tallow
Does this sound healthy to you? The first 5 from Innova because its the first I came to on the list
1. Turkey; 2. Chicken; 3. Chicken Meal; 4. Ground Barley; 5. Ground Brown Rice

Both of those are not great foods. Try the chicken soup line of dog food or nutro brand dog foods. You might even looking to feeding raw if you have the time and energy to research it and do it right! Just try and make sure CORN is not the main or even in the top 3 ingredients listed

In dog foods what you want to stay away from is BHT BHA and Ethroxyquine. These are presevatives that will harm your dog. Also you want a dense food. I wouldn't suggest a kibble like Pedigree because it has to many fillers and you will see huge amounts of stool. Higher quality foods leave less stool and dogs don't need to eat as much of them.

Toxicology of BHA, BHT and

Ethoxyquin in dog food

Ethoxyquin
Promoted kidney carcinogenesis.
Significantly increased incidence of stomach tumors.
Enhanced bladder carcinogenesis.

BHA
Enhanced stomach and urinary bladder carcinogenesis.
Causes squamous-cell carcinomas in stomachs.
(Cancers of this type are among the most lethal and fastest acting, the swiftest effects being seen among animals with light colored fur.)

BHT
Promoted urinary bladder carcinogenesis.
Could be a promoter of thyroid carcinogenesis.
Studies have noted that BHA and other antioxidants, particularly Propyl Gallate and ethoxyquin, showed additional effects in inducing stomach hyperplasia and cytotoxicity.

According to Dr. Wendell Belfield, DVM, practicing veterinarian for some 26 years, both BHA and BHT are known to cause liver and kidney dysfunction and are banned in some European countries. He adds that ethoxyquin is suspected of causing cancer and that propylene glycol (a pet food ingredient closely related to anti-freeze) causes destruction of red blood cells.

Ethoxyquin is listed and identified as a hazardous chemical by OSHA. It has a rating of 3 on a scale of 1 to 6, with 6 being super toxic requiring less than 7 drops to cause death. When manufactured by Monsanto, the containers are marked with the word POISON. Monsanto makes no representations and will not be responsible for damages of any nature whatsoever. The Department of Agriculture lists and controls Ethoxyquin as a pesticide.

a food like eukanuba is a good choice. when you're at the petstore picking out food, read the ingrediants label! you want to pick a food that doesn't have things like chicken meal in it. that means its just ground up chicken parts, not the best, healthiest parts. also, foods will contain grains. this is fine for your dog. while it may be more expensive, you are paying for quality! by buying a nicer brand of food, your dog will get the nutrients it needs through less food. while the other foods may be only $10 for a bag (like beneful or mighty dog), your dog will have to be eating a lot more of the food to get the nutrients it needs. this translates into more poo and more work for you! if you have already been feeding a cheaper, less quality food, make the switch gradually. your dog is used to eating a higher quantity of food and a sudden switch is not healthy or safe.

talk to a store employee also, they're trained to know the foods. i should know..i worked at a petstore for a year.

The one that suits your dog the best. Try to avoid cereal based foods as these just ad bulk and are very cheap which is why many manufacturers use them to maximise their profits. You want a meat based one.
