This is a link to a conversation thread on the subject:

And the following quote is from a very interesting essay on the topic at this link: http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~atdrum/Drum_essay1.pdf

"There are numerous federal regulation tests and research and development operations that consume the drug manufacturer’s finances, however must be completed before medications can be released, each at an inordinate fee. However, it is typical for pharmaceutical companies to exaggerate these numbers, in an attempt to rationalize the exuberant pricing decisions. A public citizen report found that eleven Fortune 500 drug companies spent three times more on marketing and administrative costs than research and development, negating the pharmaceutical company’s rebuttal to high prices of prescription drugs on the basis that research and development costs account for the zealous price."

Pharmaceutical companies spend a lot of money trying to discover and develop new medications-since it is a business you can't expect them to be nonprofit.
Since this is not a medication necessary to keep your son alive, insurance is not going to pay it. If you could not afford it he would have to live with his acne-people did it for thousands of years.
There do exist programs in this country to help people who need life saving meds but can't afford them-some are even sponsored by pharmaceutical companies.
