I don't think that's what lent is for at all. Lent is a time to deny yourself of a pleasure that isn't bad but isn't a need either. If someone has the attitude that they are doing it for weight loss (which some do), then they are only denying themselves the blessing that is known as lent. Lent isn't just about giving up or fasting. It is about deepening one's relationship with Christ and coming closer to him through the Lenten Disciplines -- Fasting, Prayer, and Acts of Love. It is a time to give up something and use that extra time and energy and devote it to God and other people in service and love. Not everything people do for Jesus is selfish, but yes, some people try to get a little benefit in there for themselves. It's sad, and really, they are only hurting their own relationship with Christ.

Well, I am not Catholic. I have to admit that I would rather go on a diet than eat lent. :)
I do not understand all that too much, but I think you are correct in a way. If you are sacrificing something, it should be genuine.
However, if, by dieting (or fasting) you are going to lose the 10 lbs anyway, and you need to lose the 10 lbs, then I guess it would be like killing two birds with one stone, and there in nothing wrong with that is there? I mean, why give up the fasting just because you might benefit from it, it still might be a sacrifice.
God wants love over obedience, and obedience over sacrifice anyway. Might want to keep that in mind. Also, anything like that probably ought to be kept secret, except for the people you need to tell.
Matt 22:37-38 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.
1Sa 15:22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
(also see Matt 21:28-31)
Mt 6:16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

Lent is about giving up something that you enjoy and is not necessarily about food. Lent is a practice followed by Catholics and is part of the Catholic doctrine and is not derived from the Bible, i.e. nowhere in the Bible does it say that you have to give up something for 40 days. Some believe that it is supposed to be in line with when Jesus was in the desert for 40 days being tempted by the devil. The Muslims have something similiar where they fast for 40 days.

The Catholic Church and many other Christians Churches follow the Biblical practice of Jesus Christ and the Jews in setting aside days where the entire Church fasts and prays as one in a attitude of constant renewal.
By the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert and in spiritual preparation for the celebration of His Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
This season of penance is an intense moments of the Church's penitential practice and are particularly appropriate for spiritual exercises, penitential liturgies, pilgrimages as signs of penance, voluntary self-denial such as fasting and almsgiving, and charitable and missionary works.
If giving up a food you love like pizza also helps you be both closer to God and healthier at the same time then you have a win-win situation.
With love in Christ.

In what way is not eating pizza selfish. I thought for lent you were meant to stop eating, well it's not the right word, but lavishly and stick to basic food. You are meant to give up luxuries, are you not. Pizza, in a pathetic fast food way is a luxury.

that is optionally available for Catholic Christians to abstain from ingesting meat on Holy Thursday. sturdy Friday is a mandatory day of rapid and abstinence from meat. some churches like the only I used to attend have a Christian Seder service, that's attractive. I found out a lot greater advantageous than I ever knew in the previous with reference to the symbolism of the Passover meal, the sacrifice of the lamb, and how all of it ties in with Christ's pastime. I strongly advise going to a minimum of one in case you ever have the prospect.
