unfortunatly i can not have her inside as she is a large dog and she has a habit of chewing things when left unsuervised, she has about 5 metres of chain and has easy access to food and water. and her soft comfy bed

it is while she is on heat not during summertime, please read the question properly, she is an outdoor dog, huskies actually enjoy the outdoors more then being inside, they are a snow born dog cold weather does not bother them no i do not have a room in the house in which i can leave her in unsupervised unfortunately. being a husky she is an escape artist and i do not want unwanted puppies.

chaining/tying up a dog is always cruel. i have an adopted husky dog and the only thing she chews up are her toys because she has been trained that way through positive reinforcement. huskies are indeed sensitive to both hot and cold temperatures just like any other breed. please take the chain off your dog and give her plenty of activity (walks, playtime) while you are not at work. while you are at work, be sure she has plenty of toys to help pass the time. maybe you could have a neighbor check on her or something while you're at work. my husky sleeps a lot during the times when nobody is home because when we are home we keep her very entertained with playtime and walks. activity is the key.

Just because she is tied does that mean males can't get to her?? Males are often more of the problem, they will dig/climb/whatever it takes to get to a female in heat. As long as there is adequate food/water/shelter she should be fine but a tie out is not the best idea. There is always a chance she could catch the tie out and that can cause strangulation. Where is she the rest of the time (not in heat) I'm assuming the yard is fenced by the way you're worded that?
Also are you going to breed her? If not please look into spaying. Its so much healthier for the dogs to be spayed from the standpoint of cancer risk. Every time she goes into heat her chances of mammary cancer increase, so if there's no intent to breed her that is a much better option. If its out of your price range talk to a local shelter they may have a lower cost procedure available or know of a place you can get assistance. If you are going to breed her consider a high fenced "run" for her so she'll have a nice fenced in area that she can't escape. Its better if you don't have to use a tie (strain on the neck) so if this is going to be a long term thing a run is much better for the dog.

There are several issues that concern me in your question. The first one obviously being the fact that you tie your dog outside. There are a couple of different reasons why this is cruel and ignorant.

1. Dogs ( no matter what breed) are a social pack animal. To be tied up in a yard away from the pack, means (to them) that they have been rejected from their pack. YOU are your dogs pack. Your his/her alpha or leader. Act like one by taking responsible care of her. Tying her up in the back yard while she is in heat is so unresponsible that it crosses over from negligences to abuse

2. There is no fence made that will keep a male dog away from a female in heat. It would have to be 12 feet tall (at least) with no opennings so no chain fences.

I have the following suggestions. First off, you need to decide if you are going to breed your dog. If not, then she needs to be spayed. If you are, then you need to provide protection and loving home for her. It doesn't sound like you are doing either at this point.

My other suggestion and it is sad but probably the best for everyone involved, is give her to someone who can love her and take care of her properly. Make sure if you take her to a shelter it is a no kill shelter. Do not run an ad in the paper, as some other person who has as little skill at taking care of a dog as you, might get her, and then she would be in the same shape she is now.

Be an adult. Be responsible. Properly take care of your Pet. There are resources online that will tell you how to do this, or you can ask here.

It's not only cruel, it is irresponsible. Your question and your further explanation shows you have no regard for your dog and no experience training dogs. Why in the world would you leave a female dog that you know is in heat tied outside where any male dog could get to her over and over while you are away? That's being irresponsible.

You need to spay her and then you need to crate train her. Don't give us that hogwash about being an escape artist. There are crates that can only be opened from the oustside and that's what you need to get for her. Leave her in the crate with a few chew toys, soft bed and train her to be a pet rather than a dog on a chain.

You don't think tying her out unsupervised, where any wandering male can get to her, will produce unwanted puppies? Even if you have a fenced in yard, those boys will figure out a way. And there she will be, tethered and waiting.

Your b itch needs to be protected, whether its in the house, garage, or some other enclosed area. If she's destructive in the house, consider getting a crate for her to stay in while you are gone. This will keep her from chewing things, and you won't have to worry about the stray males in your area getting to her.

Of course, I have to mention that spaying your girl will eliminate the issue entirely.

Tying a dog out for a while isn't cruel but, why isn't she in a kennel? All you've done is protect you house from her bleeding on it. Now every male dog within a few miles can come and impregnate her. NEVER underestimate the ability of the males to get to a b.itch in estrus. Hope you were looking to have a bunch of mutts. Why don't you just get her spayed if you are not properly suited to handle a dog in heat?

Yes I find it cruel. Cannot you not restrict your dog in a kitchen, or another room where she /he cannot get things to chew? I do not understand people that leave their dogs outside. Anything can happen while you are gone. The weather can turn horrific, something come into the yard. The lonliness is horrific. I am sorry but tying up a dog outside all day is very sadly cruel.

tying up a dog (and especially a husky) for so long hours is not appropriate. Firstly, tying up a dog should be associated with "punishment" so tying her up just because you are not there causes her stress and stress causes misbehaviour. You should confine the area you keep her securely and leave her free there. I am sure you can find ways to do that. Huskys are very energetic dogs and, yes, they are escape artists but there are always ways to confine them securely.

Finally you should have the dog desexed. this will calm her down. how old is she?

I’m not sure I would call it “cruel,” but it is certainly not “nice.”

If you have a room with floors (as in, not carpets), get a baby gate and confine her in there during the day. This will give her a bit more room, at least.

Barring that, they do sell special diapers for dogs in heat. You might want to consider that instead, and run home during lunch to change it.
