I am recently bereaved and used to travelling with my late husband. A friend has asked me to go on holiday with her this year which is nice but now we need to decide where to go. We are both in our late 60's fit and healthy.
She would like a cruise, but all the cruises I've been on seem to be mainly couples. I do love cruising but worried that I might get upset seeing all those couples together.
I'd like to do something different- but struggling to come up with ideas. We intend to go in May.

Hello there and firstly can I say how sorry I am about your loss.
A cruise would be excellent. I understand what you mean about them appealling to couples but thas not always the case.

If there is any one cruise line that usually has a fair number of singles aboard, it is Carnival. But a fair number these days is usually under five precent of all passengers, and they are often with roommates. Royal Caribbean's large ships are a close second in this category.

Crystal and Silversea cruise lines often have more women than men on board due to the simple demographics of women outliving their husbands. These lines cater to single women (mostly elderly widows) by putting "gentlemen hosts" on board to dance and interact with them. Even though they know they are paid to be there, somehow it doesn't spoil the fun for these ladies.
and it might be fun!

If you are really adventurous, there are lots of things you can do- what about a tour of Italy? Say Rome, Florence and Sorrento or a US multi-centre with New York San Fransisco and Las Vegas or Los Angeles?

There are a few companies (Cruise lins inlcuded) who do offer special singles week. I know you may not be looking for Romance, but at least you'd know there were other singles there.

Whatever you decdI hope it goes well for you.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. There are so very many places in the United States and around the world. I find Colorado a nice place and you can take a trip up the mountain in a train if you stop in Colorado Springs but you will need reservations. I did this and it was the most gorgeous view in the world. Also Arkansas and Missouri have lots to offer.
I would not totally rule out a cruise either if I were you. It could be that you meet some new friends and there is nothing wrong with that.
Try to keep in mind what you are wanting to get from this vacation the most. Is it sunshine you want? Culture? Entertainment? Get on the Yahoo search or the Google search and put in some of the cities or places you are interested in and add chamber of commerce. Get hold of the chamber of commerce in the areas you may be interested in and have them send you some literature of all the things they have to offer. Try Branson, Missouri for starts if you are interested. They have lots and lots to offer in the way of shows, scenery, dining, hotels, and a nice trip on a riverboat. Good luck and hope your vacation is a nice one.

Zakynthos is getting to be real popular here in Ireland.it is a Greek island.the weather is great there and there are fantastic sites to visit.even if you are not the type of person to go sightseeing you have to visit these places.you can see turtles in the waters if you go to turtle island, you can see a shipwreck in this small cove.you go there by boat and you can go and see the blue caves they are these extraordinary caves that you see by boat as they are in the see(and after-wards you can jump off the boat and swim in the see,.be careful who you go on the boat trips with to the blue caves and the shipwreck as some of them are a rip of.we went to a place at the very end.a man in the town beforehand said that there is a military fort ahead but they were just trying you to go with them.i think they started with "p" and had brothers in the end(it was two words). i think it was potanamis brothers(the spelling isn't great.there are tons of other things you can visit as well like little churches and the colors of the water is amazing its so so blue and so clear and in 1 beach you can go out loads in the water and it was only up to your knees or ankles which is great if you have kids.there is a lovely town call volimes where you can buy the nicest honey in the world and you can buy lovely presents.we stayed in a town called Tsilivi it was lovely.you have to go and see this island sometime in your life.

Best Wishes
xxxxxxxxxx
