It refers to the Almighty God being the alpha and omega. He was there before there was time and the term Ancient of Days thus refers to His experience, maturity and wisdomin all the matters

Ancient of Days is what God is called in some parts of the bible. God made all days. He always was and always will be. Ancient of Days does sound "funny," but Satan is referred to sometime as an ancient serpants.

It's a very reverant term for GOD in his glory.
Dan 7:9 I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment [was] white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne [was like] the fiery flame, [and] his wheels [as] burning fire.
