There is a methodology of modeling items to be analyzed called Finite Element Analysis. It uses the idea that complex shapes and a set of simpler shapes when analyzed for specific factors will result in the same ultimate answer but that the simpler shapes will take significantly less computation to complete the analysis. Different simple shapes are chosen for different types of analysis.
