This will take creativity and persistence.

1. Make sure you take lessons even if you don't think you need them, and practice every day.

2. Look for a local community theatre. If they do musicals, try to get a dance only part.

3. Last but not least, audition for everything you can. You can find local auditions in your area by contacting your local arts council. Ask them if there are publications or newsletters that list auditions. Every city has a community bulletin board for the arts where theaters and filmmakers are looking for singers, actors, dancers, etc...

4. You should make sure you have a headshot to take with you to the audition, some sort of resume (your experience will build and volunteer work helping others counts), and have some footage of you showing what you can do. Make copies as you rarely get it back.

5. Audition for an open call to join a dance group like the Martha Graham Dance Company.

The answer varies somewhat on what kind of dancer you're looking to be. Saying "local shows" is rather vague. Of course, in all cases, you have to be highly trained in a variety of styles and able to pick up new choreography at the drop of a hat. You get that high level of training by either taking classes at a top dance studio or majoring in dance in college. Then the dance world is roughly divided into the for-profit and non-profit sectors. If you're looking for Broadway and traveling shows, tv commercials, Las Vegas, etc, your best bet is to get a talent agent. If you're interested in being part of a dance company, you arrange to audition for them.

Well, first you have to have legs. If you've got those, you're off to a good start;)
