Hi,
You are in Chennai which means that the cost of living is less and hence more money in pocket.
May be you can try this:
For your household needs you take your salary, let your husband's salary be in bank which means you are saving the complete salary of your husband.
After 6 months or so, reverse the process - you save your salary and for household needs spent from your husband.
During this 6 months some money would have been saved in account (husband's salary), Isn't it? Take 85% of that money and put it in Fixed Deposit for 3 years or so. Rest 15% use it for buying something for your family.
I think you can continue this type of saving once every 6 months.
This would give an impression that both of you are saving and also spending for the family. Which will further strengthen the bond between you both.

Start with some kitty in ur office worth Rs 1000/- p.m. Also u can open a recurring account in bank. Fix say 8,000/- for household expenditure p.m. and even try to save out from that.

U can live on one salary, the lower salary and save the higher salary. U are young, and may be planning a family. There may be times when u maybe unemployed due to maternity or children problems. The future is important, so save for the future.

Since you both are employed, it is high time you opened a savings account in a bank near you (joint account) and start saving for the rainy day.
