I speak from experience! Yes they can help but short term. Ironically, the best thing for water retention is to drink loads of water! The body is storing it thinking it's not getting enough so if you are able to drink as much as you can (recommendation is 8 glasses, about 2 litres per day) then your body will start to regulate the water balance efficiently and therefore stop storing as it will know there is a regular supply coming in. You will obviously pee more but your body will respond far better to this than anything else.
And it's a lot cheaper than buying supplies of tablets!

As an afterthought - if you can't bear to think about drinking that much water then celery as someone's already suggested and melon which is nearly all water are fine substitutes. Try to limit tea and coffee. Try to drink loads though as it does help the body rid itself of toxins and you'll feel heaps better. And try to cut down as much as you can on salt as this is bad for holding water.
I fill a litre jug full of water in the morning and try to get through that in the morning and another by 6 pm so I can keep a better eye on how much I am taking on a daily basis. Even getting through 1 and a half will please me.

Some doctors will prescribe mild diuretics for this problem, and they do work, but drinking lots of water yourself will, believe it or not, help. If you take too many diuretics you will lose potassium which is not good for you so be careful. Don't take diuretic tablets to lose weight, that is dangerous. You could collapse.
Try the celery that someone suggested.

I would be wary of taking extra tablets - it could force your system to stop working properly for itself. Have you tried using probiotic yoghurts etc to ensure your digestion is healthy? I find thats better for me. BTW celery is meant to be a good diuretic.
