this from another question - poster describing Hell:

"You have two choices, and it is either Heaven or hell, and by the way, hell is not some get together with all the other heathens for a party with the devil. It is an extreme hot (hotter than the sun) place, know as the lake of fire with burning brimstone, extreme intolerable pain of burning continuously and your worm that never dies. A place of total blackness and hate where you are tormented and your thirst never quenches, and you will remember your life and have many regrets with memories of a chance to be saved that you just threw away. You might even remember writing this and me answering you this way. This place called hell is also a very lonely place where you never have contact with anyone again. I personally would never want to spend forever like this."

Unfortunately. It's really sad that in this day and age people are still so superstitious.

If they teach it to their kids, that doesn't mean they say things like :

If you suck your thumb you'll go to hell
If you hit your sister you'll go to hell
If you go in the cookie jar you'll go to hell

If a parent does that , they are sick in the head and social services should be called.

It is not children, but cruel and wicked adults who need such warnings. Even then I wouldn't choose the words that were used there.

Children, I think are taught about heaven and God's goodness. Hell should defiantly not be emphasized. I believe hell is simply separation from God. Since God is everything that is good, hell cannot be.

I counted 4 Non-christians who said yeah "they" teach that to children, but not one Christian parent who said they do. How does anyone know what other parents tell their kids?
As for "thaliax", I think it's a shame what his Sunday school did. Please don't judge all Christians by a few nutty fundamentalist groups.

No one is absolutely sure what hell will be like. But yes, I do believe in hell and heaven. I do not have children. Most of the children I know are taught to do the right thing as their parents and God want them to.

If you don't believe this way (which is fine) then you would teach your children the way you believe.

When these children get older, they will make their own decision from what they have seen in their lives thus far.

As you can tell from a few answers above, there are some deluded people who still believe in all this nonsense.
The prime reason that religion continues to pervade the lives of so many is the sadly too prevalent habit of misguided parentts indoctrinating their young and impressionable children.
While this happens in the xtian arena, it is by far exceeded by the actions of muslim parents. Those children born to muslim parents have no choice in the matter and the level of indoctrination in Islam is so deep that very few manage to shake it off as they approach adulthood. A great shame.

No!!! No!!! No!!!
The People have another Choice!!!
The Happy Hunting Grounds!!!
This is what should be taught to the Young people!!!
Take a look see what you Think???

Each morning upon rising, and each evening before sleeping, gives thanks for the life within you and for all life, for the good things the Creator has given you and for the opportunity to grow a little more each day. Consider your thoughts and actions of the past day and seek for the courage and strength to be a better person. Seek for the things that will benefit others (everyone).

2. Respect. Respect means "To feel or show honor or esteem for someone or something; to consider the well being of, or to treat someone or something with deference or courtesy". Showing respect is a basic law of life.

3. Once a council has decided something in unity, respect demands that no one speak secretly against what has been decided. If the council has made an error, that error will become apparent to everyone in its own time.

4. Be truthful at all times, and under all conditions.

5. Always treat your guests with honor and consideration. Give of your best food, your best blankets, the best part of your house, and your best service to your guests.

6. The hurt of one is the hurt of all; the honor of one is the honor of all.

7. Receive strangers and outsiders with a loving heart and as members of the human family.

8. All the races and tribes in the world are like the different colored flowers of one meadow. All are beautiful. As children of the Creator they must all be respected.

9. To serve others, to be of some use to family, community, nation, and the world is one of the main purposes for which human beings have been created. Do not fill yourself with your own affairs and forget you’re most important talks. True happiness comes only to those who dedicate their lives to the service of others.

10. Observe moderation and balance in all things.

11. Know those things that lead to your well-being and those things that lead to your destruction.

12. Listen to and follow the guidance given to your heart. Expect guidance to come in many forms; in prayer, in dreams, in times of quiet solitude, and in the words and deeds of wise Elders and friends.

Hokahe!!!

Yes I teach my child this. She attends both my wifes (christian) and my (Druidic) ceremonies.

Why why does hell always get played out this way. Early Christians thougth to live without god, would to never be in teh grace of god after death. They thought this was the worst possible thing that a soul could do.

The "bad" place was invented much later after people looked at the church and said "we can live with that". So teh church came up with something they couldn't live with. And now we have Hell.

I believe Hell is separation from God. My Children know what I believe in but they think different. That's ok because I want them to find their own way just like I did. My parents never forced me to believe. (Mother catholic, Father baptist) I follow neither.
My teen children have one hour of religion at school with the aim to get to know all religions. We don't have Bible study. This is only offered by protestant church which are minors in our country.

Absolutely my friend. It is truth, and truth sets you free. Your choice alone. My son has been taught about heaven and hell, but we certainly do not focus on it. We focus instead of how wonderful it is to know the Lord Jesus Christ. It is a bonus that we, being children of the Lord God Almighty, will be in heaven with the One we love most.

PS: 1 Corinthians 2:14 says, "The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned."

So hell will be like working the ER on a Saturday night?

Yes, and yes. I was adopted by a Fundamentalist family, and was taught such things throughout my childhood. The church showed low-budget films about people burning in hell, and distributed very graphic art about it to the children's Sunday School classes. We were constantly reminded about hellfire and told that our souls were in jeopardy.
