Apparently, the hyoid bone, a small bone in the neck that assists speech and does not connect to any other bone, is the only truly floating bone in the human body. But there is also a medical condition to which, I think, you are referring. One of my friends had a piece of bone fragment which had somehow come away from the tibia and causing a problem and pain. It was 'floating' in the muscle/fat. Sometimes it is caused by a blow from an accident, but other times its cause it less clear. Maybe osteoporosis, which had weakened the bones.

some people have what is known as a floating rib, this is a rib that is only attached to another bone at one end, it's not a disease, but just an anomaly, dosen't cause any problems
